                                                      INDEX

■ Jacob Heine (*2001) is a German photographer and designer. Holding a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Communication from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (BUW), he currently studies photography in the diploma class of Heidi Specker at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig. Heine’s work bridges photography, book design, and theory, regularly presented in the form of self-produced publications. Photographically interested in atmospheres of artificial light and sculptural qualities, his work textually concerns itself with the topics of autism, mental health, grief, and their connections to photography as well as philosophy, sociology, linguistics, psychology, and politics. ■ Heine has been exhibited in Germany and Japan, lastly being shortlisted for the Stiftung Buchkunst’s Sponsorship Prize for Young Book Design. Heine was a student assistant and workshop lecturer at the BUW, currently teaching there as a visiting lecturer. From 2025 to 2026, he was a recipient of the German National Scholarship Program.

    ■ In July 2026, Germany’s social state witnessed three shifts which combine into a tool of putting the nations employees under pressure. This titular tool is described in the essay “Die Kneifzange” (The Pincers). The Pincers are constructed of 1) a 34 point reform backage which includes measures to demand an  incapacity to work certificate on the first day of illness, 2) a more restrictive form of unemployment benefits (neue Grundsicherung), and 3) an austerity bill targeted at Germany’s social health insurance. Especially the third had been discussed widely, since said bill could be detrimental to citizens’access to psychotherapy. The centre-right government’s directive is to 1) force citizens to work more and 2) to apply pressure with an even more aggressive benefits system while simultaneously limit access to preventional healthcare. ■ “Die Kneifzange” gives a rough overview of how psychotherapy is entangled in Germany’s social health insurance and how it could be affected by the government’s austerity as well as the national debates around it. Furthermore, the Pincers and their relation to work and healthcare are described, therafter discussing mental healthcare in the context of a profit-oriented capitalist system as well as personal insights into healthcare as an autist.

On July 4th 2026, the right-wing extremist party AfD (Alternative for Germany) held a party congress in Erfurt, Thuringia. On this very day a hundred years before, the national-socialist party NSDAP had held its first congress after the party’s ban from parliament being lifted in Weimar, the next largest town to Erfurt. The AfD, cited as the centre of the rightward shift of German politics in the last decade, some of whose state associations are categorised as right-wing extremist, delights in high polls nationwide, especially in the face of three state elections later in 2026. Its party congress was met with citywide demonstrations of 50.000 citizens and travellers. In the weeks before, media debates had centred on the potential of left-wing violence - a violence which did not manifest. “Pikachu und die Antifa” (Pikachu and Antifa) is a report on the demonstrations on July 4th in Erfurt as well as a commentary of its coverage.

An artist book on darkroom prints. In exposing photosensitive paper to light, much of the time spent for a final image is devoted to testing and adjusting projector settings for exposure and contrast. Such test strips are normally disposed off; waste products of stages between negative and final print. 250 test strips from 2022 to 2024 were archived from sessions in the darkrooms of the photo workshop of the BUW and thereafter digitalised. The book’s format accords to the median size of a test strips from the archive.

    ■ “Limona [Love Letter/Lament]” is an artist book, a biographical artefact, and a goodbye to the photo workshop of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, colloquially referred to as the “Limona”. For Jacob, like many students, it has been a central element in his studies in photography – based upon archival tracing, he frequented the space some 270 times between September 2022 and his thesis defence in February 2026. ■ The book’s core centres on three elements whose entanglements constitute the workshop, those being human, tool, and room. A portrait series shows 25 students, lecturers, and staff in the rooms and working situations of the Limona: labouring, posing, resting – artificially lit, provoking a fictionalisation of the lived environment. These images are sublimated with detailed investigations of the natural light, colours, and textures the rooms and tools present for themselves. Their narrative is sequenced according to a work day’s structure, from commute to the closing protocol which Jacob had been responsible for as a student assistant.  ■ Textually, “Limona” presents a gradual turn. Beginning with a breakdown of the principles of the workshop as designated space, its history in higher education, theories around learning and social collectives, drawing from post-phenomenology, anthropology, and linguistics are introduced. This is succeeded by more personal passages, summarisng Heine’s studies, contextualising not only the importance of photography, but also commenting upon the process of producing his thesis. Questions around studying with a disability – autism – take the forefront and present the photographic process as a form of productive, stabilising form of labour. This topic concludes the book in a polemic and pleading epilogue, which details frustrations around the seclusion of pho-tographic education into the academic field and hopes for its democratisation.  ■ The thesis’ appendix expands upon the metatextuality of the book, drawing heavily on ergodic literature. Presented as an archival folder, it brings together data from eleven semesters of studying: an account of all days worked at the workshop, detailed analyses of files accumulated before and around the making of “Limona”, a list of music suggestions, and more.

“Dark Was the Night Cold Was the Ground” is an artist book following the move out of Heine’s first flat in Erfurt; an old, run-down worker’s house Am Salpeterberg. Showing fragments of the process of moving as well as atmospheric meditations on a familiar place, the work investigates novel experiences of autism as a disability, at the foremost due to elementary problems with change as well as a mixture of dread, sorrow and reconsiliation going along with it.The book furthermore includes short handwritten texts about the time spent at this address as well as the story of a blues song sent into space in the 70s. In this, a bridge be-tween special interest, disability, self-mythology and biographical artefact is built.

A collection of digital and analogue photo prints, packaged in an unbound folder. The works featured were supplied by Bachelor and Master students of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar who had prominantly attended courses given by Pio Rahner, then out-going artistic assistant of the university’s photography department. Said students had occassionally been referred to as “the Bagage”, their collaborative project being gifted to Rahner at the end of his contract.
